PAGE17MAZINAIGANFALL2013INTERNSGLIFWCsummerinternsvaluefieldexperienceOdanahWis.GLIFWCsGreatLakesSectionbroughtthreesummerinternsaboardtoassistwithavarietyofspringandsummerprojectsfromApril22throughAugust9.UnderthesupervisionofGreatLakesSectionLeaderBillMattesandGreatLakesFisheriesTechnicianMikePlucinskithethreereceivedahealthydoseoffishbiologythroughthelastcouplemonths.The2013GreatLakesinternsincludedHannaFiorioMasonWisconsinDaltonLebedaPaloIowaandClintSoulieraLacduFlambeaumemberfromRhinelanderWisconsin.InearlytomidJunetheinternshelpedwiththesealampreycontrolprogramsettingandcheckingtrapsintheBadRiverandtaggingreleasedlampreyalthoughthecatchwaslimitedthisspringduetothelatenessoftheseasonandhighwaterlevels.LaterinthesummerthecrewwasoutonGichigamiLakeSuperiorfortwoweekssettingassessmentnetsforGLIFWCsannualsiscowettroutsurveysnearHoughtonMichigan.ThethreesomealsowereinvolvedinjuvenilelakesturgeonassessmentsatthemouthoftheBadRivercatchingandtaggingnamsturgeoninordertomonitorpopulation.WhilemuchofthetimeisoutinthefieldsomedowntimebroughtthembacktotheGLIFWCgaragetosewdam-agednetsortothemainofficetoagefishbyexaminingotolithfishearbonesamplesorexaminestomachsamples.HannaFiorioattendsNorthlandCollegeaseniormajoringinnatu-ralresourcesfisheriesandwildlifemanagement.ShemadecontactwithGLIFWCthroughNorthlandsJobFair.Theexperiencesoundedinterestingsosheappliedwasacceptedandhasenjoyedtheopportunityforthehands-onexperiencewiththefisheries.SheespeciallyenjoyedtheworkwithnameintheBadRiverlearninghowtoinsertpithandfloytagsinfish.AtonetimeGreatLakesinternsapplyworkincollegecapstoneprojectsManoomininternscheckricestatuson40lakesOneofGLIFWCstwomanoominwildriceinternsDevonBrock-MontgomeryisasophomoreatNorthlandCollegemajoringinnaturalresourcesfisheriesandwildlifemanagement.WhilesheisaMadisonnativesheattendedConserveSchoolandbecameattractedtotheareahenceappliedforacceptanceatNorthlandCollege.PriorknowledgeofGLIFWCthroughtheLakeSuperiorConnectionProgramaswellasNorthlandsJobFairledhertoapplyforthemanoomininternshipwhichhassuitedherinterestswell.Sheenjoysthewildernessatmosphereandbeingclosetowildlifeinparticularthenumerousspeciesofbirdstheteamencounterswhilepaddlingthroughcededterritoryricelakes.TheotherhalfoftheteamismadeupbyFeleciaBressetteRedCliffwhorecentlygraduatedfromtheUniversityofMinnesotawithamajorinNativeAmericanstudiesandafocusonOjibwemowin.Aftergraduationshewaslook-ingforapositionwithGLIFWCandthemanoomininternshiphadanopening.Shehasenjoyedbeingonthewaterandalsoobservinganarrayofwildlifemuskratsbeaverbirdsintheirnaturalhabitats.Theyhaveallkepttheinternscompanyontheirdailyjourneysthroughabout40manoominlakesfollowingamapastheyseekoutricebeds.Oncetheylocateabedtheymeasuredensitybyusingametertrisectcountingthenumberofstemsandtillerswithinthetrisect.Theyalsocheckforheightpullingoneplantfromeachbedtomeasure.Notesarealsomadeonthenatureoftheecosystemwherethericeisgrowingincludingthetypeofvegetationintheareaandgeneralappearanceofthemanoomin.FeleciahasrecordedsomeoftheinformationinOjibwemowinagoodwaytokeepupthepracticewiththelanguagewhiledoingthejob.Bothinternshaveenjoyedthesummeronthelakes.TheirseasonbeganJune20andwillextenduntilAugust29th.ThenitsbacktothebooksforDevonbutFeleciaishopingtolandapositioninMinneapolisSofarthemanoominseemstobedoingwelltheyreportHannaFiorio.PhotobyMikePlucinskiDaltonLebeda.PhotobyMikePlucinskishewitnessedanawesomelakesturgeonbreechingintheriverBadRiversFreeWillyHannahopestoapplydatafromthesiscowetandlaketroutassessmenttohercapstoneprojectincollege.DaltonLebedawillbeajunioratNorthlandCollegeandisalsomajor-inginnaturalresourcesfisheriesandwildlifemanagement.HailingfromPaloIowaDaltonwasattractedtotheprogramatNorthlandaswellasthearea.HewasreferredtotheGLIFWCinternshipbyacollegeprofessor.WhileappreciatingthevarietyofexperiencesthesummerbroughthimDaltonespe-ciallylikedworkingwithnamaveryneatfishandleastlikedthemonotonyofagingotoliths.OncehecompleteshisbachelorofsciencedegreeatNorthlandhewillbepursuingemploymentinfisheriesaswellasanopportunitytoearnamastersdegreeatsomepoint.ClintSoulierisasenioratUW-StevensPointinfisheriesmanagementduetograduateinDecember2013.WithfouryearsofsummerinternworkwiththeMoleLakeTribalNaturalResourcesDepartmenthisinterestinworkingonLakeSuperiorspurredhimtoapplywithGLIFWC.Theinternshiphasgivenhimamuchdeeperunderstand-ingoftheLakeSuperiorfishcommunityanditsmanagementaswellasofGLIFWCsroleinprotectingthenaturalresources.HeespeciallylikedthegillnetassessmentworkandjustbeingonLakeSuperior.WhileintheareahealsohadtheopportunitytovisitMadelineIslandtheplacewherehisgreatgrandfa-therwasborn.Beingthereandimaginingthecommunity200yearsagowasawesomeanditalsomadehimappreciatehowmuchoftheculturehasbeenretained.FollowinggraduationClintwillbelookingforajobinfisher-iesinlandoronGichigamibutalsohopestopursuegraduatestudiesinfisheriesmanagement.Ultimatelyhisgoalistoworkfortribes.ClintSoulier.PhotobyBenMichaelsPlyingthewatersofcededterritorylakesGLIFWCsmanoomininternssurveymanoominbedsrecordingdataonabundanc
