MAZINAIGANPAGE12ByDylanJenningsGLIFWCLTETrimmingandcuttingabuffalohidetoformthedrumshead.AnotherstepintheprocessJoeSyretteandBadRiveryouthassemblethedrumframe.BadRiveryouthcompleteconstructionandlaceupthedeweigan.GatheringsupplAnishinaabeartistsBadRiverReservationWis.Onebuffalohidesomescrewsafewplywoodboardsandalittleelbowgreasefromouryoutharejustwhatthedrumdoctorordered.DuringthefirstweekinJulyBadRiversummeryouthworkershadtheopportunitytobuildadrumfromframeupfortheircommunity.Actuallytheybuiltnotonebuttwodrums.JoeSyretteadrummakerfromtheBatchewanaFirstNationsinSaultSte.MariearrivedonMondayandputtheyouthtoworkimmediately.JoeisAnishinaabefromOntarioCanadaandrecognizestheimportanceofkeep-ingouryouthconnectedtothecultureandtraditionalteachings.Theprocessofdrummakingalsocomeswithasetofteachingsthatarerarelywritteninbooks.Joewasraisedaroundthedeweigandruminatraditionalmannerandhassungwithsomeofpow-wowcountrysbestdrumgroupsfromBearCreektoNorthernCree.IcameupthiswaytowardsMilleLacsforBigDrumserviceslastspring.IcanremembersomeoftheoldmentellingmethatBadRiverusedtohavedrumslikethatintheircommunity.Itelltheyoungonesheretodaythattheyaremakinghistory.Thesedrumswillbearoundforalongtimeandthegenerationstocomewillseethisandrecognizethewonderfulthingsouryoutharecapableof.Onedrumisdesignatedfortheyouthandtheotherdesignatedforthecom-munity.Thecommunitydrumcanbeusedatfuneralscelebrationsandanythingthecommunitymaywishtouseitfor.Thedrumwillbefeastedandabriefceremonywillbeconductedshortlyafterthedryingprocess.TribalChairmanMikeWigginsrecallsOureldersrememberthattherewasatimewhenBadRiverhadBigDrumsandthattheyhadaroleinthegoodlifeofourpeople.AcoupleofyearsagotherewasasmallgroupofBadRivermemberswhojourneyedWesttoattendceremonieswiththetribewhostilltakescareoftheBigDrumsthatusedtobeinBadRiver.OurBadRiverpeoplewouldliketoseeaBigDrumreturnsomeday.ThemessagethatcamebacktoBadRiverwasthattherewasalotofworkthatstillneedstobedonehereandthatwewerentreadyyet.ItakethatmessageasapositivenotethatimpliesgoodpossibilitiesforthefuturehereinBadRiver.WatchingouryouthreceiveteachingsaboutdrumsandalsohowtheyaremadeissomethingthatIdefinitelyregisterasthetypeofworkandprepthatgoesintoacommunitygettingreadyforadaywhenaBigDrumcomeshome.Ofcoursethereisstillalotmoreworkandceremonythatneedstobedonetoo.DeweiganagreturnstoBadRiverJoeSyretteBatchewanaFirstNationsinstructsBadRiveryouthonhowtoconstructadrumframe.PhotosbyDylanJenningsCULTURAL
