PAGE13MAZINAIGANRedCliffReservationWis.Gaagtheporcupineisacommonsightinthenorthwoods.Heismostoftenseeninthetreeseatinghisfavoritespringtimebudsorwaddlingslowlyalongthesideoftheroadandinsomeunfortunatecaseshebecomesroadkill.TheroadkillgaagwaghoweverareimportanttomanyNativeAmericanstodayforacquiringquillswhicharenaturalitemsthathavebeenusedfortraditionalcraftsandregaliaadornmentlongbeforetheintroductionofglassbeadsintribalcom-munities.QuillworkisaformofartthatisstillpracticedtodayandonJune6RedCliffcommunitymembersgotachancetolearnhowtodoplaitedquillworkundertheinstructionofKathyKaeinterimprogrammingassistantNorthlandCollegesNativeAmericanandIndigenousCulturalCenter.AfterlearningfromanelderinMichiganKathyKaehasbeenquillingforovertenyearsandhasbeendoingplaitstylequillworkforaboutfouryears.RedCliffwelcomedherintoaclassroomattheEarlyChildhoodDevelopmentCenterwhereKaeexplainedhowtogetquillsfromroadkillgaagwaghowtoproperlycleananddyethemandhowtostartquillwork.Shechoosestoquillonbirchbarkandshebroughtallotheritemsnecessarytotheclassroomtoteacheagercommunitymembershowtoquill.Theclassroomwasbuzzingwithexcitedquestionsjokeslaughterandcom-parisonsbetweenquillworkandbeadwork.Accordingtosomestudentsstartingquill-workisthehardestpart.Theonlywaytolearnitistodoitanotherstudentnoted.KathyKaewasbroughttoRedCliffthroughtheNativeAmericanandIndig-enousCulturalCenteratNorthlandCollege.OneofthemainfocusesoftheCulturalCenteristribalcommunityoutreachtosupportNativestudentsbyprovidingasenseofcommunityoncampus.TheCulturalCenteralsoservesasaneducationalresourceofOjibweculturalknowledgeforpeoplebothonandoffcampus.AccordingtotheprogramsdirectorKatrinaWerchouskithecommunityoutreachisanefforttoshowthatNorthlandCollegegenuinelycaresaboutcommittingtotribalcommunitiesandNativeeducation.PlaitedquillingintriguesnovicequillersatRedCliffByEmilyNelisGLIFWCSummerInternFondduLacReservationMinn.ItsadifferentworldatFondduLacsKiwenzCampgroundduringtheannualLanguageCamp.YouhearasmuchOjibwemowinspokenasEnglishsignageisinOjibwemowinandlikemostplaceswherelotsofshinabesgatherthereisalsoalotoflaughter.The6thAnnualKiwenzOjibweLanguageCampwasheldJune19-June22attheKiwenzCampgroundinSawyerMinnesota.OnJune20threeGLIFWCinternstraveledtotheFondduLacreservationtofindthecampbustlingwithfluentOjibwemowinspeakerstraditionalcraftboothsandmanypeoplefromaroundthecountryandeventheworldjoiningtogethertolearntheOjibwelanguageandgetahands-onexperiencewithOjibweculture.TheOjibweLanguageCamphostsdifferentactivi-tieseveryyear.Thecraftstaughtthisyearincludedbirchbarkbasketmakingbeadingquillingmoccasinsewingriceknockercarvingleatherpouchesandrattles.Therewerealsomanyothercommunity-buildingeventssuchasfeastscanoeracesatalentshowarounddanceasmallpowwowandatalkingcircleasthecampfinalized.TheOjibweLanguageCampwascreatedbyFondduLacmembersJimandPatNorthrupandRickGresc-zyk.AccordingtoJimandPatthecampwasinitiallystartedtoactivelyusetheOjibwelanguageteachothersthelanguageandprovideanonthreateningrespectfulandfunatmosphereforthosewhowishtolearnaboutOjibweculture.EveryyearthecampsattendanceseemstogrowdespitenotbeingadvertisedotherthanbywordofmouthandFacebook.LastyearsKiwenzOjibweLanguageCampattracted1215people.WithsomanyactiveparticipantsandavidlearnersattendingthecamptheKiwenzCampdefinitelyhasapositiveimpactontheFondduLaccommunityandhasalsocreatedarippleeffectthatcontinuouslydrawsinpeoplefromsurroundingcommunitiesandevenplacessuchastheNavajoNationAlaskaJapanandNewZealandCampersreturnedtotheirvarioushomestiredbutenrichedfromexperiencesthataffirmedandstrengthenedallthatisOjibwecarryingwiththemnotonlyitemstheyhadcraftedbutalsoagoodspiritandbetterfeelforthelanguageanditsmeaning.ByEmilyNelisGLIFWCSummerInternKathyKaeNorthlandCollegesNativeAmericanandIndigenousCulturalCentercoachedonthetechniquesofplaitedquill-workonbirchbarkatRedCliffthissummer.Participantscouldselectfromahostofdyedquillsorusethenaturalquill.E.NelisKiwenzparticipantswereguidedbymasterbirchbarkcrafterJimNorthrupinconstructingtheultimatewinnowingbasket.Aboveacampparticipantputsinthefnishingstitches.PhotobyDarienneNezesfromnatureharetraditionalskillsOjibweskillslanguageatKiwenzORKSHOPS
