MAZINAIGANPAGE16FALL2014GLIFWCINTERNSOdanahWis.Rigoroushomeworkandexamsmicrowaveablefoodfinancialstressesandmeetingnewpeoplesumsupthecollegeexperience.Whilebalancingresponsibilitiesthatgoalongwithpost-secondaryeducationmaybeatoughtaskforsomeGLIFWCreachesouttocollegestudentsforanopportunitythatmoststudentsdesireaninternship.ForanumberofyearsGLIFWCsLakeSuperiorfisherieswildlifeandwildricedivisionshavehiredNorthlandCollegestudentstoworkalongsideGLIFWCexpertsintheirrespectivefields.SomehavebeenNativeAmericans.NowunderthedirectionoftheBoardofCommissionersGLIFWChasbroadeneditshorizonsandextendedinternshipopportunitiesexclusivelytotribalmembercollegestudents.HowevernotallinternshipsatGLIFWCareGLIFWC-sponsored.Thenewinternshipprogramwasplannedwellaheadin2013andGLIFWCsoondevelopedapaid-internshipopportunityposterthatwasdistributedamongstallelevenmembertribeshighereducationdepartmentsandregionalcollegesanduniversities.AccordingtoGLIFWCsPlanningDevelopmentProgramSpecial-istJimSt.Arnoldthemaingoalofimplementingtribal-membercollegestudentsintotheinternshipprogramistopresentopportunitiesforyoungergenerationsofGLIFWCmembertribestobecomefamiliarwithGLIFWCwhatGLIFWCdoeslearnaboutthedifferentdivisionsworkinspecificfieldenvironmentsandgainmoreknowledgealongtheway.CurrentlyGLIFWCinternshipqualificationsincludebeingenrolledasafull-timeundergraduateorgraduatestudentandalthoughinternshipsareopentoeveryonetribalmembersfromGLIFWCsmembertribesreceivepreference.StudentsmustalsohaveaninterestinafieldinvolvedwithnaturalresourcesandmusthaveadesiretoworkwithNativeAmericantribes.SpecificGLIFWCdivisionsarelistedontheapplicationandinternsareplacedintocertainfieldsbasedontheirinterests.GLIFWCwantstogiveeveryinternanexcitinglearningexperience.Currentinternsarealsoencouragedtoapplyforasecondtimeiftheychoosetodoso.AlthoughthereisnocurrentevaluationprocessforinternsGLIFWCisplan-ningonworkingwithsomecollegesanduniversitiestopossiblyturninternshipsintoaworkstudyprogramtoallowstudentstoreceivecollegecredit.GLIFWCisplanningtoprovidemanymorefunandexcitingopportunitiesinthefutureforstudentstoreceivejobskillstheywouldnotnormallygetinacollegelecturehall.MeetGLIFWCinternsDarienneNezComingfromtheNavajoNationinArizonaDarienneNezisinterningwithGLIFWCsIntergovernmentalAffairsDivisionthissummer.ShecameherethroughtheInstituteforTribalEnvironmentalProfessionalsITEPwhichisaprogramthatGLIFWCparticipatesinasahostsiteforinterns.AsasenioratNorthernArizonaUniversitysheismajoringinbiologicalsci-enceswithminorsinmath-ematicsandchemistry.HermainfocuswhileworkingatGLIFWCisclimatechangeandsheisworkingonareportRecommendationsforClimatePreparednessandResilience.DarienneenjoysworkingatGLIFWCandshesaysherfavoritepartoftheinternshipistheabilitytorelateherworkexperiencetoherbiologydegree.DariennealsolikeslearningaboutOjibwetreatyrightsandissuestheOjibweareexperiencingwithcli-matechange.ShewasinitiallydrawntoworkatGLIFWCbecauseWisconsinhassuchadifferentenvironmentcomparedtoArizonaandshealsowantedtocompareandcontrasttribalissuesbetweentheNavajosandtheOjibweg.AftergraduationDariennewishestoworkfortheNavajoNationDepartmentofFishandWildlifeduetoherpositiveexperiencesatGLIFWC.OtherplansmayincludegradschoolatUniversityofColoradoortheUniversityofArizonatostudyequinescienceoranimalscience.Dariennehashighhopesforadoctoratedegree.AsidefromstudyingandworkingDarienneenjoystrainingandridinghorseswhichareherpassionandsheisalsoteachingherselftoplaytheguitarsingandspeakhernativelanguage.CharlesWigginsCharlesWigginsisfromBadRiverandheinhisjunioryearatNorthlandCollege.Charlesisdoublemajoringinwaterandecologywithaminoringeology.HeisabiologicalscienceinternatGLIFWCandhedoesvariousthingswithalldifferentdivisionswithinGLIFWC.Heenjoysworkingwithdifferentdepart-mentsinsteadoffocusingononesingletaskespeciallybecausethisgiveshimamorebroadenedworkexperience.CharlesappliedtoGLIFWCtohelpbuilduphisrsumgainmoreworkexperi-encenetworkandlearnmoreaboutdifferentresourcesforhimtouse.Afterhegraduateshehopestofindsustainableemployment.MeanwhileCharlesenjoystakingcareofhisdaughterandplayingguitarinhisfreetime.PaulSoulierAsasenioratUW-EauClaireRedClifftribalmemberPaulSou-lierismajoringinAmericanIndianstudiesandpoliticalscience.HeworkswithGLIFWCsPlanningandDevelopmentDivisionwherehedoesnumerousjobssuchashelpingeditacookbookassistingwithinformationalboothsgettingsuppliesfromstoragehelpingoutontraditionalecologicalknowledgeandharvestingwildplants.PaulenjoysworkingatGLIFWCduetotheflexibilityofhispositionandthevarietyofworkexperienceitoffers.HeisespeciallyinterestedinintertribalorganizationssuchasGLIFWCandsincehisfatherisaGLIFWCgamewardenPaulisinterestedtoseewhatGLIFWCisabletodoandwhatithasdoneinthepast.AftergraduatingfromUW-EauClairePaulhopestofindajobpossiblyintribalgovernmentGLIFWCortheBureauofIndianAffairs.InhisfreetimePaullikestoplaytheguitarhesinabandathiscollegewatchsportsfishandhangoutwithpoliticians.AshleyDuffyAshleyDuffyisalsofromRedCliffandsheisinherfifthyearatUW-EauClairemajor-inginAmericanIndianStudies.Sheiswo
