MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTPAGE2SPRINGSUMMER2014Relaysunitetribessince198989SOLIDARITYRUNThe1989AnishinaabeSolidarityRelayJuly10-14The1989AnishinaabeSolidarityRelaywasbornintheaftermathofthe89sspringspearingseasonthatwitnessedaheightenedanduglyprotestagainstOjibweexercisingtheirtreatyrightsinWisconsin.April261987atAshlandCountysButternutLakewasanomenofthingstocome.Approximately200-300protestersmanyintoxicatedarrivedatthelandingthatnightinprotestofspringspearfishing.Spearersandfamiliesweresubjectedtoracialslursandharassingcomments.Themoodwasugly.ThecrowdsurroundedthesmallcontingencyofNativefisher-menandfamiliesandtheabilityofenforcementtocontrolthelargecrowdwasquestionable.AfewdayslaterthetribesrespondedwithashowofsolidarityonApril30whenfishermenfromsixWisconsintribesreturnedtoButternutLaketospearundauntedbythethreatsandtauntsexperiencedfournightsprevious.Withstimulusfromseveralanti-Indianorganizationsandmixedmessagesfromthestateprotestsburgeonedacrossthecededterritoriesinthelate1980sandlandingsceneswerefilledwithracisttauntssignsandsymbolsaswellasthreats.Rockswerethrownandballbearingswerelaunchedatspearfishermenfromwristrockets.Theprotestcontinuedtocrescendorequiringmassiveenforcementeffortstoprotectpublicsafety.YettheOjibwecontinuedtofishwhilestateandtribalnegotiatorssometimesbitterlyhammeredoutagreementstogovernvarioustreatyseasons.ThevoicesofracialhatredwereveryfreshinmindwhenLacduFlambeausErnieSt.GermainetraveledtoLacVieuxDesertLVDtorunintheNewWorldRunwithBillyMillsinMarch1989.TherehemetupwithLVDrunnergiiweBettyMartin.Bothwereconcernedatthetimeaboutunifyingthetribesandheal-ingNativecommunities.TherehadalreadybeensometalkbetweenKemoGaryKmiecikandErnieaboutapossiblerunaroundtheLacduFlambeaurezduetotensionsinthehighschoolbutitwasBillyMillsinspirationalmessageaboutthehealingcapacityofrunningthatreallysparkedtheideafortheSolidarityRelayMartinsays.HiswordshischallengesmadeusthinkWhynotuserunningtobringthecommunitiestogetherTheideawasdauntingbutthatsparkignitedafireandthechallengewastaken.TheproposedrelayscoursewouldconnectsevenOjibwebandsallcommunitiessufferingfromthehostileatmospherethatsimmeredinneighboringtownsschoolsandevenchurches.TherelayhadamessageaccordingtoSt.GermaineInordertogetthroughallthenegativewithoutstrikingbackinangerweneedtocometogetherasonemindoneheart.Thereisnothingwecantaccomplishtogether.Theyknewtherelaywouldrequireaconcertedefforttoorganizeandrecruitacoreteam.Sheknewpeople.Iknewpeople.Kemowouldknowpeople.TherewereNeilsKmiecikkids.Wedidsomepressreleases.GotPishkoLarryNe-sperSt.Germainerelates.HeandMartinbeganbrainstormingasthevisionofthe1989SolidarityRelaygrewintheirminds.Meanwhilethescenesofprotestsinthespringof89worsenedwithlargecrowdsformingandpushingagainstpolicelinesatlandingsacrosstheWisconsincededterritories.EnforcementpersonnelfromoutoftheareawerecalledintoprotectpublicsafetywhileorganizationslikePARRandSTAheldralliestospurpeopleon.Tribalboatswereswampedbyspeedboatsmakinglargewakes.TribalmembersweremetwithviciousthreateningsignsandchantsandapricewasputontheheadofLacduFlambeausLdFTribalJudgeTomMaulson.RunningtraditionstaysstrongthroughtheyearsTheoriginalcoursepresentedbyErnieSt.Germaineforthe1989relay.Protesterscrowdedonboatlandingsnightlyeachspringinthelate80stoharassandthreatentribalmembersexercisingtheirtreatyrighttospearfsh.CorerunnerGregLeGaultcarriedthissignonhisvehicleshowingsolidaritywiththetribes.Inresponsetothegrowingprotestandracialharassmentevidencedin1987thetribesgatheredatButternutLakeAshlandCountyasashowofsolidarityintheircommitmenttoexercisetheiroff-reservationtreatyrightsdespitetheharassmentandthreats.SeveraltriballeadersspokeduringthegatheringincludingLacduFlambeausTomMaulsonleftwhileprotesterslingeredinboatsjustoffthelanding.
