MAZINAIGANPAGE14WINTER2013-2014ENFORCEMENTOnji-AkiingonceagainshowsusthewaySidnawMich.ThefifthannualGLIFWCUnitedStatesForestServiceUSFSculturalsummercampprogramOnji-AkiingFromtheEarthbroughttogetherover80NativeAmericanyouthandstafftogatherintheheartoftheOttawaNationalForestforaweekoftreatyrightseducationnaturalcareerex-plorationandhonoringindigenoustraditions.ItwaseasytoseethejoyrespectanddepthofconnectiontoNativeAmericanspiritualitythatwasdeepenedatthisyearscampprogram.Camperscelebratedtheirrichheritagewithadventure-basedlearningactivitiesthatcenteredontheMedicineWheelinwhichthementalphysicalemotionalandspiritualaspectsoflivingareexplored.Notonlydidkidsexperiencecanoeingfishingarcheryswimmingandtheteam-buildinglowropescoursetheyalsogottostepintothelivesofseveralnaturalresourcesprofessionalswhotraveledfromfarplacestosharetheirculturalcollegiateandoutdoorknowledge.GLIFWCGreatLakesBiologistBillMattesinstructedcampersinperformingfishpopulationstudiesandfishdissection.GLIFWCBotanistSteveGarsketookkidsthroughthewoodstolearnfirst-handaboutforestpestinvaders.Youthalsoparticipatedinpre-colonialcookingwiththeGLIFWCAdministrationforNativeAmericansANAMinoWiisinidaaLetsEatGoodTraditionalFoodsProgramstaffthatpromotedhealthyharvestingandhappytummies.DavidMichenerassociatecuratoratUniversityofMichigantraveledover500milestoleadkidsthroughinterviewingplants.MichenerwhoisworkingonanindigenousgardenprojectattheuniversitystatedRespectingplantsteachesustorespecteachother.Itisallaboutintegrity.Iamhappytobeinvolvedwiththiscampbecausetheseplantsarealiveandreturnedtopeopletheyknowtheirrelatives.NikkeCroweFondduLacTribalCollegeeducationprogramcoordinatorsharedculturalwisdomaboutwildediblesandplantmedicineswiththecampers.Croweafirmbelieverintraditionalecologicalknowledgetaughtkidshowtoestablishhealthyrelationshipswiththeirplantrelatives.Shehadthekidsharvestdifferentfloraandprocessthemintoanaturalbugrepellant.Thisstuffreallyworksitssocoolexclaimed12-yearoldLacVieuxDesertmemberMabelLaBine.USFSstaffalsoreinforcedenvironmentalstewardshiptoMotherEarththroughhands-onactivitiesandheldaNaturalResourceCareerFairthatofferedpersonalexperienceinworkingplayingandcaringfortheoutdoors.ThisfairincludedseveralcollegesandtribalprofessionalsfromaroundtheGreatLakes.Thehighropescoursebeadingandwarriorgamesgamesusedtraditionallytoteachyoungonestobecomegoodprotectorsoftheirhomelandswereamongthefavoriteactivitiesatcamp.Campersalsolearnedthevalueofrespectandgivingbackthroughaservice-learningproject.Mostimportantlyeveryonehadafuntimebuildingrelationshipswiththeeartheachotherandthemselves.WiththelargestyouthattendancetodatesummercampwasahugesuccessinpromotinghealthylifestylesbuildingleadershipandprovidingafunlearningexperienceThiscampisdesignedtoempowerthelivesandstrengthenthepathsofNativeAmericanyouthtodaythroughculturalactivitiesandwisdom.Onji-Akiingworkstoprovidethetoolsthatyouthneedinordertoenrichtheirlivestheircultureandthecommunitiestheylivein.OurfirstyearcampersarenowJuniorCouncilorsseveralofwhicharego-ingontocollegesaidGLIFWCChiefofEnforcementFredMaulson.Theyveutilizedtheircampexperiencetohelponacareerpathintothefuture.Ifyouareinterestedininformationonthe2014Onji-AkiingCampProgrampleasecontactHeatherNaigusOutreachOfficerLawEnforcementathnaigusglifwc.orgorvisitwww.glifwc.org.ByHeatherNaigusGLIFWCEasternDistrictWardenWearerelatedtothetreesandtheanimals.IamgladIcameheretorememberthat.11yearoldLVDmemberFunGuyhangswithFunGiKeweenawBayIndianCom-munityMich.OnmyditchdayfromschoolIgottobeapartoftheKinomaageHarvestersWorkshopwhereIgotupcloseandpersonalwithmushroomsakafungiItraveledtotheKeweenawBayIndianCommunityKBICinBaragaMichiganandlearnedaboutdifferentkindsoffungiandtheirimportancetoNativeAmericanpeople.TheKBICNaturalResourcesDepartmentandtheCedarTreeInstitutebroughtNativeAmericanfungiexpertsfromallaroundMichigantohelpusalllearn.TheAlgonkianwordformushroomispuhpohweewhichisafunwordtosay.Thiswordisnotanounbutanac-tionwordmeaningtopopupandthengobackdownorrejuvenate.ThiswordissimilartotheAnishinaabewordformuskratwhichalsopopsupinwater.IdontreallyliketoeatmushroomsbutmymomdoessoIlearnedabouttypesthatshecaneat.Onewasthelittlegarlicthatisusedtoflavorgarlicfrybread.IthinkImighttrythissomeday.Itisfuntorunaroundthewoodsandfindcoolcoloredmushrooms.Therearealsosomanyotherusesformushrooms.ForoneAnishinaabepeopleusedacertaintypeofmushroomtobrushtheirhairandtheirhorseshair.Itiscalledtheoakcombormishimijbinakwanandhaslargeporeopeningsonitsundersidethatresembleamazepuzzle.MaybeIcanfindmymomoneforChristmas.Shelfmushroomswhenpickedfreshmakeagreatcanvasforartworkandtherearelotsofthemintheforest.Iusedamatchsticktodrawonthetopsideofthemushroom.AfterIfinishedmypictureIputitinablackplasticbagtohardenandsoonmyshelfmushroomwillbeonmyshelfIalsolearnedaboutskatogonthatcanbeusedasacauterizerorfirestarter.MyfavoritewasthepuffballbecausewhenIsqueezeditagreenmagicdustcloudcameout.Somepuffballsyoucaneatbuttheyhavetobewhiteinsidenotgreen.Iamhonoredtohavelearnedaboutthespiritualkinshipthathum
