Section Mission Statement

The Wildlife Section is concerned with the lands and waters within the territory ceded by the 1836, 1837, 1842, and 1854 Treaties and the wildlife and wild plants living there. The staff is to function as the primary source of management and research expertise for these resources for the tribes which are signatory to the treaties and members of the Commission.

Section Objectives

The wildlife section helps to provide the biological component for the organization by collecting and evaluating information in order to make recommendations for the proper use, management, and protection of wildlife and other traditionally gathered resources in the treaty-ceded areas of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

The section provides appropriate biological data on wildlife and plant resources necessary for litigation, enforcement, and wildlife and wild plant management on public lands and waters within the territory ceded by the 1836, 1837, 1842, and 1854 Treaties. The wildlife section provides recommendations for the interpretation and formulation of hunting, trapping, and gathering regulations. The section serves as the primary site for the deposition and analysis of treaty hunting, trapping, and gathering statistics and assures that the methods and procedures used in the gathering and analyzing of information are widely accepted and scientifically sound.

The Wildlife Section shall fulfill the objectives of the program through the following methods:

Inventory and Monitoring: Describe the extent, nature, and status of wildlife and wild plants of the ceded territories from the tribal perspective, using as available and applicable, current data from GLIFWC and other resource agencies plus traditional ecological knowledge from tribes.

Harvest Management: Monitor off-reservation harvest by tribal hunters, gatherers, and trappers and the biological impacts of the harvest; assist tribes in developing permit systems, quotas, or other means of managing harvests.

Technical Assistance to Tribes: Provide technical assistance and advice to tribal governments regarding regulation and management of off-reservation wildlife and wild plants, including technical assistance in negotiation and litigation.

Coordination and Liaison: Represent GLIFWC on inter-agency resource management committees and perform other liaison assignments as delegated by the Commissioners.

Enhancement: Investigate and implement means by which tribes and the Commission can expand distribution and enhance the productivity of resources in the ceded territories.

Public Information: Maintain communication with other natural resource agencies, tribal members who use treaty resources, resource management professionals, and the general public to insure a technically proficient, well-respected resource management program. Reports are available online from the Reports page.

Training and Professional Conferences: Attend professional conferences and training sessions to present information, and to obtain information on relevant techniques and issues.
